On the day he was sworn in as the Governor of West Bengal, Kesri Nath Tripathi on Thursday praised Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee describing her competent to handle all the problems of the State.

“Let me know the people here, let me know the problems… Your Chief Minister is competent to handle all the problems,” Mr. Tripathi told journalists after his swearing-in. “We will solve matters mutually through discussions,” the Governor said.

Earlier in the day, acting Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Asim Kumar Banerjee administered the oath of office to 79-year-old Tripathi. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, Speaker of the Assembly Biman Banerjee, senior Cabinet Ministers, and senior bureaucrats were present at the swearing-in ceremony.

BJP co-in-charge for West Bengal and national executive member of the party Siddhartha Nath Singh and State BJP president Rahul Sinha were present, but Congress leaders and representatives of the Left Front were absent .

There was chaos at the ceremony as the number of invitees exceeded the number of seats at the venue at Raj Bhavan.

According to officials, about 90 of those present were personal invitees of the Governor himself.

Mr. Tripathi, who took charge of Governor, is accompanied by several guests. While 29 of them have been put up at Raj Bhavan, the remaining have been accommodated at the State Guest House.

Mr. Tripathi has served in various capacities in Uttar Pradesh. A distinguished lawyer, he was former president of the BJP’s Uttar Pradesh unit, and served as the Speaker of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

He has also penned two anthologies Manonukriti and Aayu Pankh.
