Left leader writes to Modi on Ponzi scam

Impressing on that it is the Government of India’s responsibility to identify the people involved in the larger conspiracy in Saradha scam and other Ponzi firms

Leader of the Opposition in West Bengal Assembly and member of the Polit Bureau of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) Surjya Kanta Mishra has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an appointment with him.

“The Left Front Legislature Party is very much concerned and focused for the repayment to millions of poor depositors. It becomes the responsibility of the Government of India identify the people involved in larger conspiracy and attach their properties movable and immovable accrued from this source and ensure return of the deposits there from to the people defrauded,” the letter sates.

Though the letter is dated November 28, Dr Mishra released it to journalists on Tuesday. The Left Front Legislature Party has sought an appointment with Mr Modi preferably between 21-23 December to discuss the possible alternatives and the modalities to resolve the problem.

In the two-page letter Dr Mishra has pointed out that the members of the Left Front Legislative Party apprehend that there may be an all out “endeavour on behalf of the beneficiaries to misdirect and/0r throttle the investigation”.

“ It is now manifested that the State government and the political personalities who might be the beneficiaries have been trying to put pressure upon the agency. We have reasons to believe the Government of West Bengal is not serious about the preventive measures for the future too,” the letter says.

The CPI(M) leader also referred a legislation the West Bengal Protection of Interest of Depositors in Financial Establishment Bill, 2013 passed in State Assembly on April 30. 2013 was sent to the President for his assent.

The Leader of the Opposition has pointed out a new bill has been passed in the Assembly on December 2013 and is still pending with Government of India and awaiting the Presidential assent. Along with the letter Dr Mishra has also enclosed a copies of memorandum dated ( May, 2013 from the Left Front Committee, West Bengal addressed to Dr Manmohan Singh, the then Prime Minister of India on the Ponzi scams.

‘Now we want answers’

In another development Dr. Mishra and Left Front MLAs published a book titled Ebar Jawab Chai (Now we want the answers) referring to various issues raised by the Left Front legislators in the State Assembly on which they have not got the answers.

The Left Front had earlier published two books titled Jawab Mele Ni (Have not got answers yet) targeting the All India Trinamool Congress government.
