BJP remains adamant about venue

: The deadlock, over the proposed rally of BJP president Amit Shah scheduled in Kolkata on November 30, continued on Tuesday.

Hearing the petition of the State unit of the BJP, the Calcutta High Court directed the party to make an application to director of Fire and Emergency Services and approach the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) describing the site plan and the expected gathering.

Both the agencies will inform the State unit of the BJP about their decision to grant permission on November 27.

After the Kolkata police did not respond to applications made by the BJP of holding a rally in front of Victoria House, the party approached the High Court earlier this month.

The Court had directed the Commissioner of City Police to discuss the matter with representatives of the BJP and inform the Court by November 21.

In a letter, Kolkata police commissioner Surajit Kar Purkayastha said that the question of passing an order, if any on this issue, appears to be premature at this stage since the BJP is yet to take the requisite preliminary steps by obtaining necessary statutory permission for convening the meeting.

Commenting on the developments, State president of the BJP Rahul Sinha said that party supporters would ensure that the meeting is held in front of Victoria House on November 30 and the police would be responsible for the consequences.
