Final voter turnout jumps by six per cent

April 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:42 am IST - KOLKATA:

Taking a sudden jump in 48 hours, the final poll percentage of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation polls held on Saturday was declared as 68.56 per cent by the West Bengal State Election Commission here on Monday.

The figure sees a six per cent jump as the voter turnout till 3 p.m. on Saturday was declared as 62 per cent. Questions were raised by opposition parties as to how the percentage could have increased by nearly 7% when voting officially ended at 3 p.m.

“This is quite normal as the final voter turnout is not available on the polling day. Having conducted other elections, I can say that the increase is quite usual,” State Election Commissioner S.R. Upadhaya told journalists.
