Urging students to shun guidance from political and religious leaders as well as from the corporate giants, former West Bengal Governor Gopal Krishna Gandhi advised students to be guided by their own “clean conscience.”

“Do not look for political leaders for guidance. Do not look to corporate giants (for guidance). Do not look to religious leaders for guidance,” Mr. Gandhi told students while addressing the Convocation at Presidency University in Kolkata.

Mr Gandhi was Governor of West Bengal from 2004 to 2009, and popularly known as the ‘People’s Governor’ for being vocal on issues when it concerned the people of the State.

The former bureaucrat, who had not minced words to condemn the police firing in Nandigram in March 2007, is sought after in academic circles for giving clear advice to students and teachers.

His remarks are crucial as it comes at a time when frequent protests and clashes between students belonging to opposing factions are being reported across West Bengal.
