Trinamool Congress’ trade union leader Dola Sen on Saturday filed her nomination for the March 20 by-election to Rajya Sabha seat from West Bengal that fell vacant after the resignation of party MP Srinjoy Bose.

TMC nominated Ms. Sen to the seat on March 4 after party supremo Mamata Banerjee approved the screening committee’s proposal in this regard.

Ms. Sen had last year lost the Asansol Lok Sabha seat to Union minister Babul Supriyo by a margin of over 70,000 votes.

Since then she has been concentrating on her organisational role as a trade union leader.

State Education Minister Partha Chatterjee and TMC general secretary Subrata Bakshi were present in the State Assembly premises when Ms. Sen filed her nomination.

After filing here nomination, Sen told reporters “I am an obedient solider of the party and I will work in accordance to the party’s wish.”

The election has been necessitated by the resignation of Mr. Bose on February 5 in the aftermath of the Saradha chit fund scam.

According to the Election Commission schedule, the voting will take place on March 20 and the results will be declared the same day.

As per the poll schedule announced by the Election Commission, nominations would be filed between March 3 and 10, scrutiny would be done on the next day and withdrawals be made by March 13.

The new Rajya Sabha incumbent will fill in for Mr. Bose’s remaining Rajya Sabha tenure, which runs till August 18, 2017.

Given TMC’s three-fourth majority in the State Assembly, Ms. Sen is expected to sail through in the election.

Ms. Sen was on March 4 made the national INTTUC chief. She had been removed as the State president of the Trinamool trade union in November. - PTI
