Thirteen persons have died due to dengue and 1,584 have been diagnosed affected with the mosquito-borne disease in Bengal so far.
This year the first death due to dengue occurred on June 22 and since then the toll has been rising.
Speaking to The Hindu on Monday, State Director of Health Services B. R. Satpathy said that two persons died over the weekend.
He also said that the deaths are mainly taking place in the North 24 Paraganas district and especially in the South Dum Dum Municipality area on the northern fringes of the city.
Apart from North 24 Parganas, one person has died in Birbhum district. “But he contracted the disease in Howrah when he was working there,” said Mr. Satpathy.
As for Kolkata, deaths have taken place in Kasba in South Kolkata and Mukundapur on the southern fringes of the city.
Two dead in acid attack
Two women died due to alleged acid attacks in Hooghly and Nadia district on Sunday.
A woman, residing at Tehatta area of Nadia district, was admitted to district hospital with severe burns injuries on Sunday morning.
Nadia district Superintendent of Police Sheesh Ram Jhajharia confirmed to The Hindu that she died in hospital on Sunday “due to what appears to be severe burns and not acid attack”.
Another woman of Tarkeshwar area of Hooghly district died during the day due to acid attack. The attack took place on July 24. Praveen Tripathi, Superintendent of Police of Hooghly district, said: “The accused in the case Noor Ali Seikh was arrested on the day of the attack.”
