A leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) was killed in South 24 Paraganas district of West Bengal on Wednesday night.

Salauddin Haldar, 55, a member of the party’s Mathurapur-1 zonal committee, was attacked while going to a mosque at 8 p.m. Locals said at least four or five men shot him.

CPI(M) leaders alleged that Trinamool Congress workers were behind the killing.

Haldar was also secretary of the CPI(M)’s local committee in Mathurapur East in the district.

Samik Lahiri, secretary of the CPI(M)’s South 24 Paraganas district, said Haldar had tried to file a complaint with the Mathurapur police a week ago after he received threats from TMC workers. But the police did not take it seriously.
