: A peasant jatha of the Paschimbanga Pradeshik Krishak Sabha affiliated to All India Krishak Sabha, the farmers wing of Communist Party of India (Marxist), was allegedly attacked by an activist of All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) on Saturday in Purba Medinipur district of West Bengal.
Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly and Polit Bureau member of the CPI (M) Surjya Kanta Mishra said that the jatha was organised with police permission but was attacked allegedly by AITC supporters.
Dr Mishra who visited the hospital to meet the injured said that the ruling party is increasingly feeling threatened by initiatives and programmes taken by the CPI (M).
“Tarun Roy who is the Assistant Secretary of All India Krishak Sabha’s West Bengal unit has received grievous injuries on the head and is hospitalized. He is recuperating in Medinipur Medical College Hospital while the other injured people are being treated at Bhagwanpur Block and Egra Sub-Divisional Hospital,” a statement issued by CPI(M) said. According to the CPI (M), 40 supporters and leaders of AIKS were injured in the developments.
On Sunday, the West Bengal unit of AIKS has decided to organise rallies in protest against this incident.
Commenting on the development, AITC MP Subhendu Adhikari said that the Trinamool Congress has no role in the developments and if any attack has occurred, the police will take appropriate steps.
