The Anti-Corruption Branch of the West Bengal police on Thursday filed a complaint against four persons including wife of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Polit Bureau member and Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly Surjya Kanta Mishra’s wife Usha Mishra for cheating and misappropriation of funds.

“A case has been started at Anti Corruption Branch Police station on March 9 on the complaint of the State Health Department under section 420, 409, 468, 120B IPC and Section 13(1)(d) read with 13(2) of PC Act against four accused,” said a release issued by of Officer –In-Charge, Control Room of the ACB said.

The development has kicked up a political storm with the CPI(M) and other parties in the Left Front describing the complaint as "politically motivated". Describing the move as a “ political vendetta” CPI(M) central committee member and party MP Mohd Salim said that the police went looking for the Project Director of the non- government organisation against whom the charges of financial irregularities were levelled but backed off when they found that the project director has links to an MP of the ruling party.

Ms Mishra also refuted the allegations and said that the police is targeting her only because she is Surjya Kanta Mishra’s wife. “These are false charges. The raids have been timed to coincide with the CPI(M) State conference?” she asked.
