Kolkata: The Kolkata Police has filed a charge sheet against Union minister Babul Supriyo at a city court here on the basis of a complaint filed by Trinamool
Congress [TMC] MLA Mahua Mitra. Ms Mitra– who was earlier associated with the Congress– lodged a complaint against Mr Supriyo in January.
In her complaint at Alipore police station in south Kolkata, Ms. Mitra alleged that the BJP lawmaker had used words intended to “insult her modesty” during a live television show.
She alleged that Mr. Supriyo had tried to make fun of her name by linking it to ‘Mahua’, a local drink available mainly in the forest areas, during the show on January 3, 2017. On the basis of her complaint, a case was earlier registered against Mr. Supriyo for allegedly insulting the modesty of a woman.
“We filed a charge sheet against the MP at Alipore court here yesterday. He had been summoned thrice but he did not turn up,” a senior police officer told the news agency PTI. The police also submitted footage of the TV programme in which the remarks were purportedly made, the officer said.
The MP could not be reached for his comments.
