Burdwan Blast accused remanded in NIA custody

Arrested from Pakur in Jharkhand on April 20

April 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 07:48 am IST - Kolkata:

A city court on Monday remanded Ibrahim Sheikh alias Lal Mohammed in the custody of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) till May 8.

Praying for the custody of the accused, the NIA counsel said Ibrahim was arrested with ammunition, firearms and country-made bombs. According to the NIA, the accused, a resident of Nabogram area of State’s Murshidabad district, is a Shura member of the proscribed Jamaat-ul-Mujahideen, Bangladesh (JMB), Indian wing.

He was arrested from Pakur in Jharkhand on April 20 and remanded in the custody of NIA there. He was brought to Kolkata on a transit remand and produced before a court during the day. The NIA sought his custody to seek details of other accused in the case who are absconding.

According to investigating agencies, Ibrahim Sheikh was the in-charge of Fatimatul Mukimnagar madarsa in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district which was allegedly closely associated with the JMB. The madrasa was closed and sealed by West Bengal police after Burdwan blast on October 2, 2014.

The NIA had filed its charge sheet in connection with the blast last month concluding that there was large conspiracy by the JMB to overthrow the government in Bangladesh through serious of violent activities.

Meanwhile, various human rights organisations in the State have raised several questions about the investigation of NIA. The agency is picking up “innocent civilians”, the civil rights organisations have alleged.
