Blame game over assault on policeman

January 07, 2018 09:59 pm | Updated 09:59 pm IST - Kolkata

The assault on a police officer in Howrah district on Saturday has taken a political turn, with the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Opposition parties engaging in blame game over the incident.

While the TMC denied involvement of its party workers in the incident, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alleged that no action was being taken against the “main culprits” as they belonged to a “particular community” and enjoyed the patronage of the ruling party leaders.

The Officer-in-Charge of Shyampur police station Sumon Das was assaulted by a mob in the early hours of Saturday when the police intervened in a dispute over a Waqf Board property.

He suffered serious head injuries.

Seven persons have been arrested in the case so far.
