Berhampur varsity students demand police patrolling

The demands include complete ban on entry of heavy vehicles through the university campus

Students of Berhampur University in Odisha held demonstration on the campus on Wednesday for their long standing demands.

Meanwhile, the Vice-Chancellor of the University Deepak Kumar Behera and Registrar Manmath Padhi met the Ganjam District Collector, Berhampur Superintendent of Police (SP) and Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) regarding fulfilment of some major demands of the students. Later in the afternoon the V-C and the Registrar held discussions with representatives of students about the steps being initiated to fulfil their demands.

Speaking to The Hindu , Prof. Padhi said the SP agreed to start regular police patrolling on Berhampur University campus from Wednesday evening, which was a major demand of students for maintenance of law and order on the campus.

The students had also demanded appointment of a female doctor for the university campus. The CDMO has posted a lady doctor who is expected to join in next few days. The university authorities have also agreed to provide her free residential quarter on the campus.

The students had demanded complete ban on entry of heavy vehicles through the university campus. These heavy vehicles take a short cut via the university to reach the National Highway. Regarding it the V-C and the Registrar had met the Collector. According to Prof. Padhi, they received positive response from the district administration. He added that the students demonstrated peacefully and no untoward incidents were reported during their agitation.
