May 31, 2016 12:00 am | Updated 05:41 am IST - Kolkata:

The State-level medical entrance examination conducted by the West Bengal Joint Entrance Examination (WBJEE) Board will be held on July 20.

A total of 75,682 students have registered for the exam this year, out of which 44,258 would appear for both the medical and engineering tests and 31,604 only in the medical entrance examination.

The candidates will sit for physics, chemistry and biology examinations.

The medical entrance examination which was scheduled to be held on May 17 along with the State-level engineering entrance examination was cancelled following a Supreme Court directive stating that there will be a single medical entrance test in the country: National Eligibility Entrance Test (NEET). Soon after the directive, the Centre issued an ordinance that empowered the States to conduct their own medical entrance test for the last time.

NEET is the new national level entrance examination intended to bring all medical aspirants under one test. From next year, it will be the sole entrance test to enrol into medical colleges.

The first phase of NEET will be held on May 1 while the second will be held on July 24.

The related rankings will be released on August 17 following which counselling will end by September 30.
