Refuting the speculations that the West Bengal Assembly polls scheduled in 2016 may be advanced, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said here on Friday there was still a year left for the polls.

“We have one more year till the next elections….I am not going to run away nor will allow you (the Opposition) to run away,” Ms Banerjee said while participating in a discussion in the State Assembly.

The Trinamool Congress government has completed four years of its term on May 20, 2015.

The TMC chairperson also expressed hope that her government will come to power again. “With the blessings of the people at large we will come to power again and continue doing the good work,” she said.

Participating in the discussion on the allocation of the State Home department -- a portfolio held by the Chief Minister, she rubbished the Opposition’s charges of violence during the recently held civic polls.

When Congress MLA Manoj Chakraborty challenged her claims in the House, Ms Banerjee retorted how could the Congress win five seats at KMC in such a situation.

The Left Front legislators walked out of the House protesting that the Chief Minister does not answer their questions in the Assembly and seldom participates in the proceedings of the House.

The Opposition targeted the State government on various issues including Khargragarh blast, deteriorating law and order situation and frequent political clashes.

Accusing a section of media of distorting facts, Ms Banerjee claimed there were no political clashes in Birbhum district as claimed by the Opposition.

She said that footages aired by television channels are “old” and that there was no violence in Sattor area of Birbhum district.

“The man shown in the footages firing from his rifle is wearing a sweater and a shawl. It is evident, that the footages are old and a section of the media, in connivance with the Opposition, is fabricating things,” Ms Banerjee said.

She also tabled a report of the Birbhum police in the House. She lauded the State’s police CID for arresting the accused in the gang-rape of nun in Nadia district.
