Another person assaulted in Bamongachi

The perpetrators of such crimes are being backed by political parties, says painter Samir Aich

Amid ongoing protest in support of college student Sourav Chowdhury, who was allegedly murdered for protesting illegal activities in Bamongachi in North 24 Parganas district, another person, Srikanto Bhadra, was assaulted on Tuesday night in the same area for protesting anti-social activities in front of his house.

Police said that two arrests have been made in this connection.

“About a fortnight ago, I had protested one of the miscreants Amjad (one of the accused) for creating a ruckus in an inebriated state in front of my house.

Ever since, he has been threatening me,” Mr. Bhadra said. Mr. Bhadra said that on Tuesday evening, Amjad forcibly entered his house in a drunken state, dragged him onto the road and beat him up.

“I will continue to fight for a peaceful environment in my locality even if it leads to my death,” he said. A club located close to his house is used for anti-social activities, he alleged.

Condemning the incident, painter Samir Aich said, “The perpetrators of such crimes are being backed by political parties. Yet the same parties offer their support to the families of the aggrieved and try to dismantle protest forums in support of such issues.”

‘Gram Raksha Bahini’, entrusted with the responsibility of patrolling streets and ensuring law and order, should be formed, to combat such anti-social activities, State Congress leader Pradip Bhattacharya said.
