The Kolkata Police on Wednesday initiated departmental inquiry against an official of Ekbalpur police station in the southern part of the city for allegedly assaulting two local youths inside the police station.

“Departmental inquiry has been initiated against Ekbalpur police station sub inspector (SI) Pijus Sarkar,” DC Port, Imran Wahab, who is in charge of the proceedings, told The Hindu here on Wednesday.

The incident took place on Tuesday afternoon when two brothers Adil Naseer and Atif Naseer — sought to lodge a complaint for a missing mobile phone. An argument started between Adil and Asif and Mr. Sarkar when the later did not want to register an FIR but insisted that they lodge only a general diary.

The brothers alleged that when they insisted of mentioning that their father was an advocate in the complaint despite Mr. Sarkar’s objection, the later assaulted them with a baton.

“Later they (Adil and Atif) said that the mobile phone was recovered but the SIM card was still missing. They said that the S-I had assaulted them. A case of theft has been registered,” Mr. Wahab said.
