CPI (Maoist) spokesperson acquitted

Communist Party of India (Maoist) spokesperson in West Bengal, Gour Chakraborty, who was behind bars since his arrest under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act UAPA in 2009, was acquitted by a city court here on Tuesday. The charges against Mr. Chakraborty could not be established in the court of law.

One of the first arrests under the UAPA, Mr. Chakraborty was held in Kolkata on June 23 2009, a day after the Centre banned CPI (Maoist).

Charged under Section 20 of the UAPA, which provides punishment for being member of terrorist gang or organisation, Mr. Chakraborty, a septuagenarian was arrested after he reportedly claimed that he had links with the outfit during a debate on a television channel.
