Five more persons were arrested in connection with the murder of student Sourav Chakraborty.

But the family members of the deceased student raised questions over the ongoing probe, pointing out that the main accused was still elusive.

“Three days have passed. So far, the police have not informed us about the ongoing probe in the matter. We demand a CBI probe into the entire matter,” father of the student told journalists.

The father said if the administration wanted it could of have arrested main accused, Shyamal Karmakar, on the night the crime took place. “There is virtually no administration,” the father said.

According to the police, four persons were arrested at Ghola in North 24 Parganas. All the four youths, who are in their twenties, are associates of the main accused, Karmakar.

Two of them are named in the first information report filed by the police.

The police also arrested Polly Karmakar, the sister of the main accused, whose house was attacked by locals on Sunday. Locals have claimed that the main accused, Karmakar, took shelter in his sister house after the crime. One person was arrested on Sunday.

Meanwhile, locals who have set up ‘Sourav Chowdhury Pratibadi Mancha’ organised a protest in the Bamongachi area in North 24 Parganas district during the day.

While the demand for the CBI probe was gaining ground, the State government made it clear that it was against it.

Food Minister and Trinamool Congress district president Jyotipriya Mullick ridiculed the demand saying “a demand for CBI probe is being made after a dog bit a dog”.

Those arrested during the day have told the interrogators that the murder of Sourav Chowdhury was a planned crime. The victim was strangled to death and then his body thrown on railway track before a passing train.
