Journalist in police custody

A court here on Tuesday sent journalist V. Anbalagan to police custody for a day. The court directed the police to produce him before the court on Wednesday at 2.30 p.m.

The police had filed a petition seeking custody to interrogate him in the case pertaining to threatening Coimbatore Corporation engineers to part with money for not publishing defamatory articles against them.

Protest

Residents of Ramanathapuram staged a protest here on Tuesday against setting up a liquor outlet. Around 30 residents led by PMK functionary Subramani shouted slogans against setting up the shop. They said they would also petition the Collector in this regard.

Three held

The police have arrested Sriram (23), a resident of RVS Colony; Vasanthkumar (19), a resident of MGR Street; and Ummar (23) on the charge of robbing Sowmyanarayanan, a resident of Uppilipalayam, of ₹650 at knife point on Monday.

Two killed in accidents

Mandu Das (22) of Assam, working at a private company near Keeranatham as security guard, was killed in an accident on Monday night. He lost control of his two-wheeler, hit a street light pole, and was killed instantaneously. Chinnan (55) of Ponnegoundanpudur AD Colony was killed in an accident involving his two-wheeler and a road roller near Annur on Monday night.

Woman assaulted

The police are on the lookout for Selvam, a construction works supervisor, for allegedly assaulting his wife Sharmila. Her neighbours admitted her to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital.

N. Veeravel (23), an engineer, was killed when he lost control of his motorcycle while returning from Ooty with his friend. Prasath (30) who was riding pillion sustained injuries.
