Jagan on fast from today seeking roll-back of bifurcation

October 05, 2013 12:31 am | Updated November 16, 2021 09:34 pm IST - HYDERABAD:

Seeking a roll-back of the Centre’s decision to divide the State, YSR Congress president Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy would launch an indefinite fast from Saturday near the party office at Lotus Pond in the posh Jubilee Hills area here.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, he dubbed the UPA Government’s decision as “arbitrary” and was taken solely for “votes and seats”. He said “people who took this decision should roll-back. They can’t take people for granted”. Describing the Centre’s decision to split the State without an Assembly resolution in this regard as “unprecedented”, he wanted the enactment of a law to prevent the Centre from dividing any State without the consent of the Assembly.

He said that no other State was bifurcated without the resolution of the respective Assembly, be it Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh and sought to know why the well-laid out convention was set aside in the case of Andhra Pradesh.

He did not see any hitch for a roll back of the Cabinet note when an ordinance cleared by it was withdrawn. Referring to constitution of GoM, Mr. Jagan asked “can a GoM give a solution in six weeks”. Is it right to split a State just for votes and seats, he said and pointed out that the State was getting Krishna waters only after the requirements of Maharashtra and Karnataka were fulfilled at present. What would be the fate of Srisailam and Nagarjunasagar when another State comes in between? Observing that it took 60 years to develop Hyderabad to the present level, he questioned how a new capital could be built in just 10 years. What about the employment and educational opportunities for youth? Where would they go?

He urged all parties, including Telugu Desam and BJP, to join hands with him in the fight against injustice. This kind of irrational decision would not stop with Andhra Pradesh.

“They will do it everywhere in the country for votes and seats”, he added. Mr. Jagan also appealed to floor leaders of all parties in Parliament to intervene to redress “this injustice”.
