In an effort to sensitise students on the ill-effects of drug abuse and addiction, the Central Bureau of Narcotics organised an awareness campaign at Christian Medical College (CMC) and Government Vellore Medical College Hospital (GVMCH) on Wednesday.
A. Venkadesh Babu, assistant narcotics commissioner of the Central Bureau of Narcotics delivered a talk on “Drugs and Addiction: Do you know enough?” to a gathering of students. Such awareness campaigns were being organised in many educational institutions across the country.
At CMC, Mr. Babu spoke on drug abuse and addiction to an audience of medical and allied health students. He provided information on the harmful effects of drugs and highlighted the dangers of prescription drugs that are the cause of more deaths than heroin and cocaine combined, a press release said.
He told students that as future health care providers, they should be aware that prescription drugs are being increasingly abused in India.
He said that those who stay connected to family and friends were protected from the dangers of drug abuse and addiction.
At GVMCH, he said that those possessing drugs can be punished with one to 10 years of imprisonment. He urged the students to take a pledge to eradicate drug abuse/addiction and create awareness among others.
