The Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) organised a begging agitation in front of the Collectorate here on Monday stating that the State Government should concede to the just demands of the striking transport workers.
The agitation was to create an awareness among the general public that how the wrong policies pursued by the government had made the present and the former workers of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) virtual beggars.
The DYFI members urged the government not to harass and threaten the striking workers. The TNSTC management has pressed the drivers of the school vehicles and the private fleet operators into press. This is a dangerous trend and may lead to mishaps. The drivers of private operators always have the experience of driving the buses which are in good condition. Forcing them to operate the TNSTC buses, a majority of which are defective, will prove dangerous. The government and the TNSTC should not play with the lives of the common public, they said.
Due to the wrong policies of the state government, the farmers, students have been pushed to a precarious position. Now the state government has pushed the workers too to such a condition, said N. Praveenkumar, district secretary of the DYFI.
P. Kandasamy, district president of the DYFI, led the agitation.
