Painting competition for school students and storytelling contest for college students marked the World Book Day celebration at the District Central Library in the city on Sunday.

World Book Day is an annual event designated by the UNESCO to promote reading, publishing and copyright. It was celebrated for the first time in April 1995. Children and people from various walks of life come together on this day to appreciate reading, very happily and very loudly.

The main objective of the celebrations is to encourage children to explore the pleasures of books and reading by providing them with the opportunity to have a book of their own.

More than 200 boys and girls from different schools across the district displayed their talent with brush and colours at the painting competition, which was inaugurated by V. Madeswaran, District Library Officer.

The story telling event too evoked good response when about 100 college students narrated stories of their choice.

Mr. Madeswaran said that a ten-day book exhibition brought up jointly by the District Central Library and the New Century Book House Private Limited will be inaugurated by the District Collector V. Sampath at the District Central Library hall on April 17. The exhibition will continue till April 25.
