The railway tracks near Rangarajapuram flyover continue to be a death trap for people.
An unidentified youth who was allegedly trying to cross the railway track near the flyover on Wednesday was hit by a train.
According to residents of the locality, the victim along with his companion who was allegedly speaking on the mobile phone had tried to cross the track at 4.30 p.m. The other person allegedly escaped from the spot after the accident.
A total of five persons have been killed in the spot after the inauguration of the flyover. A few weeks ago, S. Rajagopalan (59) of the locality was hit by a train when he tried to cross the railway tracks through the damaged portion of the walls near the flyover.
Following the accidents, the railways have already cleared the broken portions of the wall near Kodambakkam Railway Station to reconstruct it.
“The police personnel are present near the flyover. But they are yet to prevent people from crossing the tracks. They remain mute spectators,” said Vishvamitra, a resident of the locality.
“Many persons use the tracks as public toilet. The police have to take action,” he added.
“The work on construction of a wall has started near Kodambakkam railway station. The completion of the work is expected to prevent such accidents,” said C. Seshadri, president of Subramania Nagar Civic Welfare Association.
The wall near the railway track was demolished during the construction of the flyover by the Railways and the Chennai Corporation. Residents attributed the delay in providing the residents with a pedestrian subway to the Chennai Corporation and Railways.
The Railways have completed a portion of the subway and the Corporation is all set to commence the work.
The ‘Y’-shaped flyover has been constructed to reduce traffic congestion on the Doraisamy subway.
