Work on the construction of two link taxi tracks at the Chennai airport has been completed.
Airport Director E.P. Hareendranathan said while one was ready about a fortnight ago and had become operational, the second would be ready within a week.
Construction of the third track at the inter-section of the main and secondary runways would be taken up from April 2. The work would be completed in about a month's time and during that period the threshold of runway 25 would be displaced to a distance of 710 m. About 2,948 m of runway would be available during this period.
The first link taxi track was constructed over a distance of 1,030 m on runway 25 and the second for a distance of 1,700 m, he said.
The tracks would help in reaching the night parking bays and the hangars without affecting the movement of other aircraft using the main runway. Similarly, it would also help the aircraft from the secondary runway to reach the main runway without waiting for long time, he said.
The work started in July last year. As per the original plan, it was to have started in April last year and be completed in July. However, owing to some problems the work began in July and all three link taxi tracks would be ready by next month.
