With the inauguration of the Rs 54-crore flyover at Porur junction a month ago, the decks were cleared for a slew of other infrastructural works. To facilitate the construction of flyover, decision on starting some long-pending projects had been deferred. The Greater Chennai Corporation has started the construction of stormwater drains — six-feet deep and two-feet wide — in the neighbourhood, notably at Karampakkam Main Road and First Street in Porur. As a result of the flyover work, for the last ten years, Karampakkam Main Road and First Street had been a one-way, allowing vehicles from Mount–Poonamallee Main Road to Arcot Road to ply on it.

Due to this, stormwater drain work could not be started on these two roads.

“Both these roads took a heavy battering during the 2015 floods. We hope construction of stormwater drains is completed before the onset of the north-east monsoon,” says S. Vanmathi, a resident of Porur.

Corporation officials say stormwater drain work on two streets will be completed in a month.

Also, Metrowater is expected to start work on a sewage drainage system and piped water supply soon.
