Residents may have to wait till the end of the Lok Sabha polls for well-designed roads in most neighbourhoods.

The Chennai Corporation has instructed officials to suspend work on cement concrete roads and bituminous roads as the model code of conduct for elections is in place. The Corporation Council had recently passed a resolution on re-laying of bituminous and cement-concrete roads in 10,000 stretches. The civic body also issued work order.

Work on some stretches was under way when the Opposition parties started protesting forcing the Corporation to stop work.

“Work was suspended a few days ago following a protest in Seshachalam Road in Saidapet. We had finished laying one layer of concrete. Some persons prevented workers from laying another layer of concrete on top,” said an official of Chennai Corporation.

Work on Marina Loop Road, cement concrete rods on 12 bus route roads at Rs. 76 crore has also been stopped. The deadline of March 2014 for first phase of 1,063 interior roads getting white topping is also not likely to be met, officials said.

Chennai Corporation Commissioner has instructed officials to avoid commencement of work on stretches for which work order has already been issued. “But ongoing works will not be stopped,” an official said. Work on 1,063 interior roads is underway.
