Construction of the Rs. 4,320-crore liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Kattupalli, near Ennore port, is likely to begin this year.

Making the announcement in the Assembly on Friday, industries minister P. Thangamani said the work would be completed by 2017. The project was proposed by the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco) along with Indian Oil Corporation. Aimed at handling 50 lakh tonnes of LNG annually, the proposed terminal will distribute about 180 lakh cubic metres per day to power plants, fertiliser units and others.

In March last year, an agreement was signed by Tidco and IOC to expedite the implementation of the project. The front-end engineering and design work had been completed.

Special economic zones

After the introduction of minimum alternate tax (MAT) and dividend distribution tax (DDT) by the Union Government, the demand for special economic zones (SEZ) has come down. The State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (Sipcot) has proposed to de-notify the leather and footwear products SEZ (153.68 acres) in Irungattukottai on the western outskirts of the city.

The government proposes to expand Sriperumbudur Industrial Park by acquiring 1,780 acres in Vallam, Vadagal and Budhanur villages and Oragadam Industrial Growth Centre Expansion-II by acquiring 616 acres in Vaipur, Mathur and Perinjambakkam villages.

Once land acquisition for the Sriperumpudur expansion project is completed, allotments will be made to investors from countries including Japan, Korea, Finland, Germany and France. The government has issued orders for 100 acres of land each to be allotted by Sipcot for separate industrial parks from such investors.

Last January, a detailed project report on polymers conversion industries park was sent to the Union Government. To be located in Voyalur village of Ponneri taluk in Tiruvallur district, the proposed park will entail an investment of about Rs. 243 crore.

As for the proposed project on integrated financial services centre (IFSC), a feasibility report has been prepared and Tidco is taking steps to implement the project by identifying suitable land near the city.
