Work to construct two flyovers on the busy junctions linking Periyar EVR Salai with Nelson Manickam Road and Anna Nagar Third Avenue will begin in a few days.

The two L-shaped facilities would be constructed at a total cost of Rs.117 crore. The traffic volume on the two junctions is estimated to be nearly 20,000 passenger car units during rush hour.

Officials of the Highways Department said that one of the flyovers would begin on Periyar EVR Salai and land on Nelson Manickam Road. The two-lane flyover would be 520-metre long and the carriageway would be 7.50-metre wide.

The other flyover would begin on EVR Periyar Salai near the Nelson Manickam Road and end about 150 metres beyond the Anna Arch into Anna Nagar III Avenue. It will be 590-metre long and the carriageway 7.50-metre wide.

The flyover leading to Anna Nagar III Avenue would have a loop, which would land near the Arignar Anna Government Hospital of Indian Medicine's farm. On completion of the flyovers, no right turn would be available at the junction for vehicles coming from Nelson Manickam Road. Such vehicles would have to take the loop.

Provision of seven service roads would form part of the projects. Of the total cost, Rs.40 crore has been set aside for acquisition of land mainly from government agencies. The Anna Arch would be relocated about 50 metres away, towards the Anna Nagar roundabout, to facilitate the project, the officials said. The project is expected to be completed in two years.

On the ongoing work to provide additional bridge on Periyar EVR Salai at Aminjikarai close to the project site, the officials said the work would be completed by next month. There is a proposal to widen the other part of the existing bridge later.
