Actor Jyothika made a rare public appearance at the audio launch of her comeback film, 36 Vayadhinale , here recently.

It is a remake of Malayalam film, How Old Are You? , directed by acclaimed filmmaker Roshan Andrews. The plot revolves around a middle-aged woman who faces an identity crisis after giving up on her dreams for the sake of her family. Jyothika is playing the lead role in a film after almost nine years since her marriage to actor Suriya. She admits she had doubts and it was her friend who nudged her to do a film.

At the function, Jyothika acknowledged the work of her support staff — at home and outside — who helped her manage time while she was away. “Women do so much work at home and it is not easy. I couldn’t have done this without my family and support staff,” she said.

The film is produced by Suriya. He said he has been facing the heat from fans for Jyothika’s absence from films and wanted to make amends.

Filmmaker Roshan Andrews, whose movies are often talked about for their sensitivity and nuance, said he always wanted to cast Jyothika in the remake.

He wanted to remake the film in Tamil because it deserves a wider audience.
