Ten young women scientists from across the State were awarded for their contributions to society on Wednesday.
The awards were given at the Chennai Science Festival, organised by Science City and Anna University.
In the broad spectrum of agricultural sciences, D. Jegadeeswari of Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Virudhunagar district, contributed to an increase in coconut productivity and P. Janaki of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore in soil science.
While S. Velmathi of National Institute of Technology, Tiruchi, received the award in the discipline of chemical sciences, G. Wiselin Jiji of Dr. Sivanthi Aditanar College of Engineering and P. Indira Arulselvi of Periyar University, Salem, were awarded for their research in engineering and life sciences respectively.
Research on treatment of industrial waste water helped K. Ramani of SRM University, Kattankulathur, get an award in environmental sciences. Other recipients were G. Nagamani of Gandhigram Rural Institute-Deemed University, Dindigul (mathematical sciences), S. Latha of Anna University, Tiruchi (medical sciences and native medicine), M. Umadevi of Mother Teresa Women’s University, Kodaikanal (physical sciences) and V. Jayalalitha of Veterinary College and Research Institute, Thanjavur (veterinary sciences).
Minister for Higher Education P. Palaniappan gave away the awards and inaugurated the exhibition at Anna Gem Science Park School on Gandhi Mandapam Road, which is on till Saturday.
Nearly 70 students from various schools were also given Children’s Science Academy awards.
