A 70-year-old woman and her 60-year-old sister were murdered by the former’s adopted son and his friend, allegedly over a property dispute in Thiruverkadu on Saturday night. The police arrested the suspects within two hours of the crime taking place.

According to the police, Ranganayaki, 70, was staying with her son Ezhumalai at Mathiravedu within the Thiruverkadu police station limits. On Saturday afernoon, Ezhumalai left with his wife and children to Bengaluru to meet an ailing relative.

As Ranganayaki was alone, her sister Krishnaveni came home to be with her. Her son Saravanan dropped her around 9 p.m. and left the house.

Neck slit

On Sunday morning, when Saravanan came home to deliver breakfast, he found Ranganayaki dead on the sofa in the hall with her neck slit.

He went in search of his mother and found her dead in the bathroom. Chilli powder was strewn all over the house and jewels and documents were missing. He immediately informed the Thiruverkadu police about the murders.

Forensic experts were pressed into service.

During investigation, the police came to know that there was a property dispute in the family. “We came to know that Ranganayaki’s adopted son, Balakrishnan, was not on good terms with the family as he wanted a share in the property,” said a police officer. When the police went in search of him, they found him in a TASMAC shop in the locality. “There were bloodstains on his hand. When we interrogated him, he said that there was some argument over property and in a fit of rage, he committed the murder. His friend, Sunderamurthy, and one more person, was there with him,” the officer said.

The police arrested Balakrishnan and Sunderamurthy. They are searching for the third suspect.
