A 32-year-old woman was attacked and robbed on the campus of Alagappa University in Ekkattuthangal on Friday afternoon. Her condition is known to be stable.
Guindy police said Mahalakshmi Mahadevan, a resident of Balammal Street in Ashok Nagar, Arumbakkam and an employee of a private firm, had gone to the university’s office of distance education at Ambal Nagar to enquire about a course.
She was returning from the first floor office around 1.30 p.m. when a young man suddenly gagged her from behind. “The suspect stabbed her in the abdomen twice and also inflicted a cut wound on her arm. He then stole the four sovereigns of gold jewellery she was wearing and fled along with an accomplice,” said an investigating officer.
Passers-by took her to a private hospital. The victim’s father said she had been moved to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital in the evening. GH sources said that Mahalakshmi had suffered a tear in the liver and bowels as a result of the stab wounds and was taken for surgery around 9.30 p.m.
Doctors said she was out of danger.
