A 30-year-old mason was arrested for running over a 52-year-old cook inside a government school in Ellis Road in Triplicane.

According to police, Mangayarkarasi (52), a resident of Thayar Sahib Road, was working as a cook in a Government Girls School on Ellis Road. Some construction work was being carried out on the school premises.

The contractor for the work, Malik, came to the site around 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoon. Sekar (30), the mason at the construction site, approached Mohan, the driver of the car, and asked him to let him drive the car.

The car was on gear and when Sekar started the vehicle, it lunged forward and hit Mangayarkarasi who was cooking nearby.

She died on the spot.

Munira Begum, who was standing near her, was injured and was admitted to the Government General Hospital.
