Woman run over by bus

In a tragic road accident in Royapettah on Saturday evening, a 47-year-old woman was run over by an MTC bus after she was knocked down from a motorcycle on which she was travelling with her son. The driver of the bus has been arrested.

Anna Square traffic police identified the deceased as Sumathi, a resident of Karim Subedar Street in Royapettah, who was riding pillion with her son Gokulakrishnan (22) on a motorcycle that the latter had borrowed from his friend.

The accident occurred around 4.30 p.m. when the mother and son came arrived near the Dr. Besant Road – Tippu Road junction. The MTC bus (route number 13), heading to T. Nagar from Triplicane, collided with Gokulakrishnan’s motorcycle and the two were thrown on the road. The speeding bus, driven by Ramakrishnan (22) of Mangadu, ran over Sumathi and she died on the spot. Her son Gokulakrishnan escaped unhurt.

A crowd gathered and traffic police was alerted. A team from the Anna Square traffic investigation department arrived at the spot and sent Sumathi’s body for a post-mortem examination to the Government Royapettah Hospital after conducting preliminary investigations, police said.
