A septuagenarian was relieved of her gold jewellery by a suspect, who cheated her after promising to arrange old age pension, in Saidapet on Wednesday.

According to police, M. Devaki (70) of Thiruvanamalai came to see her son in Saidapet on Wednesday. While on a bus from Tambaram to Saidapet, an unidentified person picked up a conversation with her.

Promise

Claiming that he was her son's friend, the accused promised Devaki that he would immediately arrange the pension for her.

Believing his words, the woman got down along with the accused, who took her to a government office nearby. Asking Devaki to get an application from the office, he told her to remove her gold jewellery as the scheme was meant for those belonging to the below the poverty line category.

Leaving 10 sovereigns of jewellery with the accused, the woman went in to the office.

Accused missing

When she came out a little later, the accused was missing. The Saidapet police are investigating.
