The Chennai Police on Tuesday arrested a woman on charges of murdering a three-year-old boy whose body was found in a suitcase at Nagapattinam on Monday.
According to police sources, G. Jayakumar (35) lodged a complaint with the Esplanade police that his son was missing after he sent him with a colleague S. Poovarasi (26) on July 17. When enquired, the woman claimed that she suddenly fainted while going to a church with the boy. On regaining senses, she found him missing.
Commissioner of Police (in-charge) Sanjay Arora formed a special team to investigate the case. While the team was trying to locate the boy, the Nagapattinam police informed on Monday that a suitcase containing the body of a boy was found abandoned in a bus.
After Jayakumar and his wife identified the victim as their son, the police interrogated Poovarasi again. The woman said she murdered the boy since Jayakumar refused to marry her after having an affair. Poovarasi took the boy to her hostel where she strangulated him to death with the help of a rope, he said.
The accused stuffed the body in the suitcase and took a bus to Puducherry. From there, she boarded another bus to Nagapattinam but alighted en route leaving the suitcase. The accused was with Jayakumar when he searched for the boy and lodged a complaint with the police about his missing son, the sources added.
