A woman who demanded refund of advance for vacating a house was allegedly hacked to death by the owner at Washermenpet here early on Tuesday.

According to police sources, L. Lakshmi (45) was staying in a house owned by John Jaisingh (40) of Pallavaram.

A couple of months ago, he asked her to vacate. When she demanded refund of advance, Jaisingh refused to pay and forced her to leave. Around 1.30 a.m. on Tuesday, Jaisingh came with two others and barged into the house.

He attacked Lakshmi who was sleeping in the presence of her teenaged son and daughter.

The victim suffered deep cut injuries and died on the spot. Even as the children raised an alarm, the accused persons managed to escape.

Local people resorted to a road roko in the Cemetery Road area demanding arrest of the accused.

Joint Commissioner of Police (North) S. N. Seshasai said special teams had been formed to apprehend the accused.

Woman found hanging

A woman allegedly committed suicide at her residence in Adyar here on Monday.

According to police sources, N. Vidya (26) of LB Road was found hanging from the ceiling in her room. One of her friends, who came to see her, noticed it through the window after there was no response to his calls.

He alerted Vidya's husband. The victim left behind a suicide note.

The body was shifted to the Government Royapettah Hospital for post-mortem. A probe by a Revenue Divisional Officer has been ordered into the incident, the sources added.
