A 36-year-old woman was found dead with her throat slit in her house in Okkiyam-Thoraipakkam on Wednesday afternoon.
Police suspect personal motive behind the killing and have ruled out murder for gain.
The deceased, V. Kavitha, was alone in the house in Soolaima Nagar 1st Street, Mettukupam, after her husband Veerappan, a wholesale fish dealer, left for work in the morning. Their two daughters and son had left for college and school.
When Veerappan returned home around 2.30 p.m., he found the gate and the main door wide open.
“He went into the bedroom and found Kavitha lying motionless on the bed, bleeding profusely from a deep cut in the neck. He raised an alarm, following which neighbours and a tenant residing on the first floor rushed in,” said an investigating officer.
Senior police officers visited the house and conducted preliminary probe. Fingerprint experts combed the bedroom and the rest of the house for vital clues. The body was sent for postmortem to the Government Royapettah Hospital.
Even though the almirah in the bedroom was found open, no valuables were reported missing. The gold jewellery Kavitha was wearing was intact.
According to the police, the couple moved into the house three years ago from Kannagi Nagar and had rented out a portion on the first floor.
