Sarmila, a 40-year-old woman, was found dead near an abandoned granite quarry pit-turned-pond in Rathinamangalam on Sunday.

According to the Tazhambur police, Sarmila, wife of lorry driver Selvam, and other residents of the locality used to take bath in the stagnated water in the abandoned quarry pit.

On Sunday, she left her house around 8 a.m. for a bath but failed to turn up even after an hour.

Selvam and the others went to the quarry to look for her but found Sarmila lying in a pool of blood near the pit.

On receiving information, the Thazhambur police rushed to the spot and sent the body, with deep cuts on both hands and legs, as well as the throat, to the Chengalpattu Medical College hospital for post-mortem.
