In a freak mishap, S. Ambiga (22), an employee of the manufacturing unit of Nokia in Sriperumbudur, succumbed to injuries on Monday, sustained at the unit on Sunday night.
According to police, the victim was injured around 8-30 p.m. on Sunday after she was hit by an arm of an automatic loader machine while trying to retrieve an electronic chip board.
She was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Sriperumbudur, from where she was shifted to a hospital in Chennai. She died around 1-30 a.m. on Monday.
The police said that she was a native of T. Pudur village near Ilavan Thindithangal in Tiruvannamalai district.
Committee set up
The State government has constituted a high-level committee under the chairmanship of Labour Commissioner Hans Raj Varma to inspect the accident spot and suggest measures to prevent such incidents.
Chief Inspector of Factories Iyyanu and DRO Kancheepuram, Sivarajan are the members of the committee.
Meanwhile, the CITU general secretary A. Soundararajan said a solution for the problems of the workers in multi-national companies could be found only through trade union rights.
Demand for trade union bill
“The government should introduce a bill for trade union rights in these companies in the coming Assembly session,” he added.
Citing the accident in Nokia, he said the victim, Ambiga, could have been saved if the machine was broken to rescue her.
“The incident has proved the scant regard the officials have for a human life,” he said.
