A 24-year-old woman committed suicide after killing her two-year-old daughter at Kasimedu on Tuesday morning.

The police said the woman took the extreme step as she was depressed after her husband’s death a week ago. P. Bhuvaneshwari, married V. Pugazhendhi, a crane operator at Chennai Harbour, three years ago. A few months ago, Pugazhendhi was diagnosed with throat cancer and he underwent treatment at Adyar Cancer Institute. However, his condition deteriorated and he died.

After his death, Bhuvaneshwari had appeared depressed and shown suicidal tendencies, neighbours said. Late on Monday night, she strangled her daughter, Dikshiktha, to death with a rope and then committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling.

Some relatives, noticing her absence on Tuesday morning, peeped through a window and found the bodies of the woman and her child. They then informed the Kasimedu police.

The police have sent the bodies for post-mortem and registered a case under CrPc section 174.
