A 32-year-old man was arrested for throwing acid on a 21-year-old woman in Adambakkam on Thursday afternoon.

According to the police, Vijay Bhaskar, a resident of Maduvankarai in Guindy, works as a vendor in an IT company in Sholinganallur.

He met Kavya (21), a resident of Parameshwar Nagar, a few years back. She works in a browsing centre near NGO Colony in Adambakkam. They fell in love a year ago.

The affair came to the knowledge of Kavya’s parents and they agreed to get them married. However, since the past three days, whenever Vijay Bhaskar contacted Kavya, she said she was not interested in marrying him.

Angry, Vijaya Bhaskar approached Kavya’s parents who asked him to be patient and promised to get the two married.

“But he was impatient and went straight to the browsing centre where Kavya works,” the Adambakam police said.

He said he wanted to talk to her and asked her to step out. “As they were talking, Kavya saw him pulling out a bottle from his pocket. She blocked his hand but some acid fell on her face, hands, hips and legs. Vijaya Bhaskar too sustained injuries,” the policeman said.

Kavya raised an alarm and passersby nabbed him and handed him to the police. He has been remanded. Kavya has been admitted to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.

Last November, Vinodhini, a B.Tech graduate employed in a private firm in the city, was attacked in a similar manner by Suresh, alias Appu, 32, whose advances she had rejected.

She suffered grievous injuries and is now undergoing treatment here.

The attack took place when Vinodhini was visiting her parents in Karaikal for Deepavali. Suresh was known to Vinodhini’s family. He allegedly procured sulphuric acid for Rs. 200 and hurled it at Vinodhini.

Suresh was arrested the next day and cases were filed under Sections 307, 326, and 324 of IPC for attempt to murder and causing grievous hurt.
