A 29-year-old woman from Perambur, who tested positive for H1N1, was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Thursday evening. She was discharged on Friday evening after treatment.

According to hospital authorities, the woman, who had recently been to Hyderabad, was admitted after she exhibited symptoms of the flu during a check-up in the outpatient ward. “We put her on treatment, but as she was a category B patient, we had her under observation. She was discharged today,” said a senior hospital official.

Infected patients are placed into three categories A, B or C – based on the severity of their symptoms. A Category A patient needs no treatment; those in category B are given medicines and quarantined at home. C category patients are hospitalised, hospital dean R. Vimala explained.

The woman’s husband was also tested for the virus. “Since he tested negative, we gave him one dose a day of prophylactic treatment. The patient has been put on two doses of medicine a day for a week,” an official said.
