The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO), a Government of India undertaking under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, has developed a wheelchair for persons with cerebral palsy, a neuromuscular disorder.
The wheelchair, which was exhibited at the 21 national conference of Orthotics and Prosthetics Association of India, consists of straps for supporting and balancing shoulders and feet, cervical collar for neck support and foot rest. It also has a detachable study board.
Managobinda Swain, prosthetist and orthotist at ALIMCO, said a detachable closet has been included beneath the seat to serve as a toilet aid. The corporation has been distributing various aids and appliances to children with special needs under Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan. The beneficiaries are selected through screening camps. About 1,000 such wheelchairs will be distributed across the country, he said.
