Governor hosts reception at Raj Bhavan; Chief Minister visits temples

Hoisting of the National flag, distribution of welfare measures, organising community feasts and cultural programmes marked Independence Day celebrations in the city on Tuesday.

Governor Ch. Vidyasagar Rao hosted a reception at Raj Bhavan, during which he presented rolling trophies to local bodies that excelled in the Armed Forces Flag Day collection in 2015.

In the morning, Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami and his Cabinet colleagues took part in special pujas and community feasts at various temples.

At Southern Railway, its General Manager Vashishta Johri unfurled the National flag at RPF Parade Ground. Speaking on the occasion, he said that the doubling of Chennai – Madurai line (497 km) with electrification would be completed this year. Doubling between Ponmalai and Thanjavur (47 km) and Changanasseri and Chingavanam (9.5 km) has also been targeted for completion during this year.

At CGST and Central Excise Department, C.P. Rao, Principal Chief Commissioner of CGST and Central Excise (TN and Pondy), unfurled the National flag. Chennai Petroleum Corporation Limited’s Managing Director Gautam Roy took the salute at a parade by the CISF contingent. He presented awards to employees for long service. Cultural programmes by employees added colour to the event.

At the Integral Coach Factory S. Mani, general manager, unfurled the National flag and accepted the Guard of Honour given by the RPF contingents. Addressing the gathering, he said the ICF produced 2,277 coaches in the current production year, which was 272 more than the previous year.

Indian Oil Corporation’s Executive Director (regional services) Southern Region hoisted the National flag in the presence of T.G. Nagarajan, chief general manager (lubes), Indian Oil Tamilnadu State Office.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation’s Basin Manager T. Rajendran (Cauvery Basin) unfurled the National flag at the function held at CMDA building, Egmore. R. Ramakrishnan, Basin Manager-KG basin, was also present.

At the State Consumer Dispute Redressal Commission, Justice S. Tamilvanan, Commission President, hoisted the National flag in the presence of A. Paramraj, Registrar. MTC Managing Director V. Krishnamoorthy presented certificates of appreciation to staff. Tamil Nadu Dr. MGR Medical University Vice-Chancellor S. Geethalakshmi hoisted the National flag on the university premises.

Kancheepuram events

Hoisting of the tri-colour by Collector P. Ponnaiah, followed by march past by the Kancheepuram Police District personnel and cultural programmes by school children, marked the Independence Day celebrations held at the Anna Police Parade Grounds at the District Collecorate.
