‘We are doing due diligence’

The Chennai Metro Rail has resolved many civic issues reported by residents and line agencies during the development of the tunnel and elevated stretches, said an official of Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL). “Whenever we do the work, we identify all utilities. We start the work only after providing alternative arrangements,” said the official.

“We have put in alternative pipelines to facilitate the draining of stormwater from every locality where work is underway,” said the official.

Pointing to the complex nature of the utilities network located under ground, Metro Rail officials said huge sums of money were being spent on restoring underground structures, such as drains. Issues reported by line agencies on disruption of utilities have been resolved in areas, such as Kilpauk, Nandanam and Vepery.

“Metro Rail infrastructure will only improve civic conditions. Every civic issue will be resolved,” said an official. Meetings are held with line agencies frequently to identify civic issues caused by the work. Modern public transit is being developed without existing facilities being tampered with,” he said.
