Water, sewer lines of sealed buildings cut

Chennai Metrowater has started disconnecting water supply and sewer lines of the 25 buildings on Ranganathan Street and Usman Road in T.Nagar, which were sealed on Monday.

According to officials of Metrowater, measures are being taken based on the report provided by Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority and Chennai Corporation – the two agencies that sealed the buildings. The process to disconnect the water and sewer lines of the buildings began on Monday late night.

Metrowater had recently disconnected the lines in four other buildings in areas, including Royapettah and Mylapore.

On Tuesday, the number of shoppers to the retail hub in T.Nagar was considerably less. The designated parking lots in the nearby areas wore a deserted look.

“Many of the people who come here for purchase as part of wedding ceremony requirements failed to turn up. Such people from nearby towns such as Tindivanam and Villupuram and the surrounding villages did not come today. These people used to come by train,” said S.Raja, an employee of a shop that was locked and sealed on Monday.

Many products already purchased by customers and stored in the sealed shops are yet to be delivered to the people concerned, according to shop owners.

Employees waited at the entrance of their locked shops on Ranganathan Street and Usman Road till noon and shared their grievances with representatives of the merchants' association who visited the area.

President of Tamil Nadu Vanikar Sangangalin Peravai T.Vellaiyan visited the area and said that the locking and sealing of violations was legally necessary but the drive had severely affected the livelihood of hundreds of employees and small retail outlets. Many of the visitors from suburbs had to return after they found their favourite shops locked and sealed on Ranganathan Street and surrounding areas, said M.Silvester, an employee of a retail outlet in the area. “The hawkers too had a dull business as they depend on the people visiting big shops in the area. Natesan Street, one of the streets where motorcycles of visitors used to be parked, wore a deserted look on Tuesday,” he added.

“We are yet to receive our wage for October. We are feeling insecure now,” said S.Visakan, an employee who has been working in T.Nagar retail outlets for the past few decades.

V.S.Jayaraman, one of the residents of T.Nagar said, “We are also equally concerned about livelihood of employees. We are not against the existence of shops in T.Nagar. But traders have to ensure that they adhere to rules.”

“The shops should remain closed once a week. This would make the area a better place for residents. The shops should also provide parking space for vehicles,” he added.

In a press statement, CREDAI Chennai president T.Chitty Babu said: “This is a serious matter of concern for all of us, this is the result of not adhering to the rules and building norms. The builders and developers community is not involved in these instances as these are effects of developments or alterations carried out by the building owners themselves. The 267 member strong CREDAI TN Chapter representing the builder community in Tamil Nadu understand the importance of complying with the existing building norms and are signatories to the code of conduct that demands zero deviation from approved plans”.

According to a senior official of CMDA, some of the cases mature next week and action may continue. “But we are not contemplating demolition for the time being. The owner should come clean,” the official added.

Some good can come out of this incident. It is for the CM to take the necessary steps in this direction and I urge her to take these steps - she has to decongest T Nagar and Chennai.There is demand for these traders ; there is demand for T Nagar to be the preferred location - it is central. The CM has to come up with an idea where the traders remain ( the customers are happy ) and the location changes from T Nagar ( T Nagar gets decongested). One has to study the origin of customers - Thiruvalluvar seems a popular origin. There could be others.The TN government has to then offer all the popular traders land - along the suburban railway network and otherwise. If I was in South Chennai , ie Tambaram and couuld visit a Sarvana nearby I would not trek to T Nagar. Ditto for Pothy's, GRT , Kumaran Silks, Nalli. The govt has to treat retailing as an industry ( look at its turnover and attraction to citizens) and offer them land and other infrastructure. Not Chennai alone but allover TN.

It is a commendable effort by the CMDA to seal the illegally built buildings. The action must continue and demolition of these buildings should commence soon. We have faith in the new CMDA officials and Corporation Mayor in this matter. Let us wait and see their action

This has to be glorious news. This is judiciary at its best. Let us see if the officials who signed the permissions now go to Puzhal Jail and whether the businessmen involved also go to jail for bribing and getting false clearances. Mr Mohan is a little cynical and he may well be right. I am hoping that he is not proved right and this cancellation of licences and the demolition of the buildings proceeds. Driving in T Nagar is a relief these days. Govt should create four satellite markets in the North , South, East and West of Chennai where land can legally be offered to popular stores and marketing centres created. Eg South of Tambaram would be one option where a Pothy's, Sarvana Stores, Big Bazaar, Kumaran, Nalli can be given land and infrastructure for a fee. Similarly along ECR or OMR. Annanagar East or a little north of it is another possibility. The businessmen should be consulted and these locations finalized. The businessmen would do well to go where the customers are.

The traders are passing the buck to the owners of buildings for the alleged violations of building rules.The building premises have been extended to suit the requirements of the traders.The public will not buy the idea of the traders that they were only tenants and they were not responsible for the violations.CMDA which insists on parking lots for even small residential buildings have permitted these high rise buildings to come up with practically no parking space even for two wheelers.The authorities should ruthlessly pull down the unauthorised structures.

this is how small platform shop keepers requested the residents of ranganathan street early in 70s and have become owners of the street and refuse to go to other places in spite of knowing very well how they came to this place without any right over the places where they were running business now it is the turn of big businessmen to usurp the property against the wish of the owners and construct such unauthorised buildings and on the plea of not questioned so far they want the business to continue showing the plight of their employees, customers etc. where is going to be the end for such things

The action atlast by CMDA on the building owners who violated, despite court orders and CMDA regulations have to be commended. It will be a joke on the rules and judiciary if the violations will continue and going to be normal, as felt by another reader. The grumble by traders and merchant associations against the action of CMDA are to be ignored, given the fact that they did this knowingly, thereby flouting the safety and grabbing the parking space. The surprise and shock is the attitude of an Assistant Judge of a lower court, who passed an order to stay the proceedings of CMDA. As quoted by the High Court, the lower court judge seems to lack back knowledge about the previous rulings and present circumstances.
